Week 39: Create the No-Fix Zone
A “no-fix zone” isn’t a no-truth zone. It means we listen before we advise, ask before we correct, and pray before we prescribe.

QUESTION
When your friend opens up, do you listen all the way—or jump in too fast with analysis, advice, correction, or your own story?

STORY
Mat, Rob, and Neal were huddling.

Mat asked Neal what was most important for him to talk about.

Neal raised his eyebrows and sighed.

“I’m not in a good place at home. I’m angry too often, and I’m not proud of how I’m talking to my wife and kids.”

Rob almost jumped in with, “You should…”

But he caught himself.

Instead, he asked, “I bet you don’t want advice right now? Want to explore what’s going on and maybe have us pray for you?”

Neal exhaled.

“Yeah. You’re welcome to ask me some questions. I already know I need to change, but I’m not too sure how.”

Mat prayed a brief Man Prayer.

“Father, help Neal understand and solve this with Your power and love. Do Your will in him and his family. In Jesus’ name and purpose, amen.”

Over the next few weeks, Neal unpacked his struggles at home and some deeper issues with God. The solution that unfolded wasn’t something his friends could have prescribed. It was God’s solution.

His friends didn’t judge him. They didn’t manage him. They didn’t fix him.

They listened. They asked. They prayed.

Truth came, but it came in a safe way and pace.

That’s the consistency and depth of Level 5 Friendship: Consistently huddling to invite honesty, bring things into the light, then asking permission to share perspective, scripture, prayer and counsel.

SCRIPTURE
“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak….” — James 1:19

Galatians 6:2 could also say, “Carry each other’s burdens” TO GOD!

EXAMINE SELF
When my friend shares personal and deep stuff, do I:

  • Interrupt?
  • Tell my own story?
  • Secretly judge him?
  • Fix too fast?
  • Correct before I understand?
  • Feel uncomfortable with silence?

Am I making it safer or harder for friends to be honest around me?

QUOTE
“Advice without much listening feels like criticism. Listening well feels like love.” — Jeff Kemp

TIP
Make your huddling time a “no-fix zone.” Ask:

“Want just prayer and questions, or perspective and advice?”

“Would you like us to explore this with you?”

“What do you sense God may be showing you?”

PRAY, CONFESS & REPENT
Father, forgive me for listening too little, talking too soon and fixing too fast. Teach me to understand before I talk and to pray before I coach.

COACHING
Most guys shut down when they feel judged, corrected, or managed.

A core friend doesn’t ignore truth, but he doesn’t rush it either.

Listen to understand and identify with your friend until God guides you to a defining question or scriptural truth.

Safety grows honesty. Honesty brings truth into the light. Then prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel can land.

Good friends eventually challenge each other. But truth lands best when a man knows you’re for him.

And the best solution to your friend’s issue is not yours. It’s God’s…and it’s best if it occurs to your friend.

ACTION STEP
Next time you huddle, say:

“Let’s listen rather than fix. Let’s get good at questions and let each guy figure things out.”

And ask each other: “What do you need from me/us right now?”

TALK & PRAY WITH FRIENDS
Ask your core friend(s): “What helps you open up and what makes you shut down?”

Pray: “Father, help us listen rather than fix, ask before we advise, and pray before we correct. Give us patience, humility, and courage to help each other find Your solutions.”

COMMITMENT
I will listen all the way before I advise, correct, compare, or fix.

HABIT
Ask. Listen. Thank. Pray.

Speak truth in love, with grace.

C3C TAKEAWAY
A “no-fix zone” is still a truth zone.

Judgment shuts men down.

Fast fixing keeps men shallow.

Safety grows honesty. Then prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel can land.

Instead of fixing, help your friend find God’s solution.
