Week 40: Talk About Husbanding & Fathering with Respect
Marriage and fathering are sacred ground. Enter with humility.

QUESTION
Do you value discussion about being a better husband and father, and give it the focus and respect it deserves?

STORY
In our Zoom huddle call, Kent asked what was most important to discuss.

I went straight to my marriage and summarized a conflict I’d kept simmering.

“I asked Stacy about the best part of her day. She mentioned reading her historical fiction book. Then I peppered her with questions about that era. She felt interrupted. I defended my motive as engaged listening. She closed down, and I argued for my good motive.”

John asked, “Where’s it stand now?”

“I’ve stewed for two days and haven’t had a real conversation with her.”

John then told a funny story about his talkative elderly mom interrupting friends at her retirement home. We laughed as he described her repeatedly taking over conversations.

His gentle comment became the husband coaching I needed: “Mom, you offer your friends much, but sometimes people just want to be listened to all the way through.”

I knew my solution.

I asked Kent and John to pray as I planned to apologize to Stacy.

Over the next day, repentance and repair replaced simmering frustration.

Sometimes God uses a friend’s story instead of direct advice.

SCRIPTURE
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church.” — Ephesians 5:25

“Fathers, do not exasperate your children.” — Ephesians 6:4

EXAMINE SELF
Do I value discussion about husbanding and fathering?

Am I open to help or do I become defensive?

Do I justify my motives instead of facing my impact?

Am I helping my wife and children feel heard, loved, and understood?

QUOTE
“A core friend helps a man face reality without shaming him.” — Jeff Kemp

TIP
When huddling, ask permission before speaking into a friend’s marriage or fathering. Start with respectful questions.

Share your own struggles, mistakes, and lessons.

Ask God to give you a third-party story that may be easier to receive, like John’s story with me or the prophet Nathan’s story with King David in 2 Samuel 12.

PRAY, CONFESS & REPENT
Father, forgive me for defending myself instead of listening. Teach me to love my wife and children like Jesus loves me. Give me humility to repent and courage to repair.

COACHING
Marriage and fatherhood are sacred ground. Don’t barge in with advice.

Listen with respect. Ask with humility. Speak truth with permission.

A core friend helps a man face reality without shame. Point him back to Jesus’ love, forgiveness, repentance, and repair.

Begin with respectful questions or by sharing your own struggles, errors, and lessons.

Sometimes God uses a story that lands better than direct advice. The prophet Nathan shared a story with King David after his adultery (see 2 Samuel 12). God used John’s story with me.

Truth lands best when a man knows you’re for him.

ACTION STEP
When you huddle next ask: “Where do we most need help becoming more like Jesus as husbands and/or fathers?”

Then listen, ask questions, pray, and support one next step.

TALK & PRAY WITH FRIENDS
Ask: “What kind of conversations about marriage and fathering help you grow?”

“What kinds make you defensive or avoid sharing?”

Pray: “Father, guide us to be friends who help one another love our wives and children well. Give us humility to open up with each other and receive truth and courage to repent and repair. Help us become more like Jesus with each other and at home.”

COMMITMENT
I will welcome caring questions and lean into marriage and fathering discussions with humility and respect.

HABIT
