Week 44: Return to Your Identity in Christ

QUESTION
When pressure, failure, temptation, or success shakes you, do you return to your identity in Christ—or drift into proving, hiding, comparing, performing, or self-protection?

STORY
While huddling with his core friends, Caleb admitted, “I’ve had a few good weeks spiritually, but I worry that I won’t sustain it. Things feel strong right now, but I know how quickly I can slip back into old patterns.”

Brett asked, “What usually pulls you off track?”

Caleb didn’t have to think long. “Pressure. I start feeling like I have to prove myself at work, at home, even with God. I put this weight on myself to get everything right. Then I get more impatient at home, I skip my morning time with God because I’m rushing, and before long I feel distant from Him again. Then I feel guilty, which only makes it worse.”

Josh nodded. “I know the feeling. But if you were coaching yourself right now, what truth would you remind yourself of that could bring you back to God?”

Caleb sat quietly for a moment. “I’d remind myself that my relationship with God isn’t based on my performance. I don’t have to earn His approval. I’m God’s son, and I’m unconditionally loved by Jesus. Even when I stumble, that doesn’t change who I am or whose I am.”

Brett smiled. “That’s the truth you need to come back to.”

He prayed that truth over Caleb, asking God to help him live from acceptance rather than constantly trying to earn it.

Before they left, the three friends agreed to hold one another accountable by asking a simple question each week:

“Are we living from performance, or are we living from sonship?”

SCRIPTURE
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God.” – 1 John 3:1

“You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” – Galatians 3:26

“Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God” – Romans 8:14

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you.” – John 15:4

EXAMINE SELF
Where and when do I most often forget my identity in Christ?

When I fail?
When I succeed?
When I’m criticized?
When I’m tempted?
When I’m tired?
When I’m trying to lead?
When I’m not in control?

Ask yourself: “What false identity do I return to under pressure?”

Performer?
Fixer?
Victim?
Orphan?
Lone ranger?
Image manager?
Self-sufficient man?

QUOTE
“You don’t sustain growth by proving you’re strong. You sustain growth by returning to who Father God says you are.” — Jeff Kemp

TIP
Use identity-return questions in your huddle:

“What performance pressure is crowding out your true identity as the Father’s son?”

What does Father God say to you in scripture that affirms His unconditional love and adoption as a son?

CONFESS / REPENT
Father, I confess forgetting who I am in Christ. I let pressure, fear, and performance call the shots. I approach my spiritual life with effort and guilt, instead of remaining in Jesus. Forgive me. Anchor me again in Your love and the truth of who I am.

COACHING
Remind yourself that drift and growth are both tied to identity. Keep rejecting your old false identity and embracing your true identity as the Father’s son.

You don’t mature by performing. You mature by receiving and remaining in Jesus. Receive your sonship. Receive the Father’s love. Huddling is more than just talking. It’s identity reinforcement.

The Word tells us who God is, who we are, and how to walk. Mutual discipleship means friends help each other return to the Father’s voice in His word. Let trusted friends remind you who you are when pressure makes you forget.

ACTION STEP
Prompt a conversation with a core friend about, “Where and when are you and I most likely to forget who I am in Christ?” Coach yourselves with an identity truth you need to anchor in each week.

TALK & PRAY WITH FRIENDS
Ask and share with your huddling friends: “What Scripture and truth brings you back to your identity in Christ as sons?”

Pray: “Father, anchor us in Jesus. Remind us that we are Your loved sons. Use our friendship to keep bringing us back to our true identity.”

COMMITMENT
I will live from my identity in Christ and help my friends do the same.

HABIT
Start each day thanking God for adopting and loving you as His son.

TAKEAWAY
Core friends remind each other that growth is anchored and sustained in identity.
