Week 46: Receive Feedback with Gratitude

QUESTION
When a friend gives you honest feedback, do you receive it with humility, dismiss, or minimize the truth?
STORY
Three friends were huddling when Aaron asked a brave question:
“Guys, is there anything about me that I’m not aware of or seeing?”
Dave hesitated. He was impressed Aaron asked that question, but he wasn’t sure if Aaron would actually receive the feedback. Since he’d asked, he answered with care and honesty.
“Thanks for asking, Aaron, but I’m not sure you realize how hard it is for you to receive feedback. Usually when we offer it, you explain why we ‘don’t understand’ or you argue the point. It makes it hard to be honest with you.”
Aaron’s chest tightened as he felt the sting. His first instinct was to disagree and explain.
But this time he paused and took a breath.
“Thanks, Dave. That took courage. I need to hear that…and to figure out how to really change that part of me.
After pondering it, he realized something. “Dang, my defensiveness is probably what frustrates my wife and is causing the nagging distance between us.”
Aaron’s grateful response changed the tone and depth of their conversations and friendship. His friends relaxed as they felt safe to tell Aaron the truth without getting dismissed or pushed away.
Aaron didn’t need to agree with every detail or respond immediately. But he helped himself and his friendship by thanking Dave for his courage to speak truth.
That’s Level 5 Friendship… when you’re loyal, safe, and brave enough to tell the truth…and to receive it.
SCRIPTURE
“Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head; let my head not refuse it.” — Psalm 141:5
“Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.” — Proverbs 27:6
“Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise.” — Proverbs 15:31
“Be quick to listen, slow to speak.” — James 1:19
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” — James 4:6
EXAMINE SELF
How do I usually respond when someone gives me honest feedback?
- Quickly defend or explain?
- Deflect or laugh it off?
- Minimize, discount, or disagree?
- Pull back and get quiet?
- or…Thank them and try to learn more?
How can I make it more safe and easy for friends to tell me the truth.
QUOTE
“What you resist persists.” — Anthony de Mello
TIP
You don’t have to agree immediately. Receive first. Process later.
“Thanks for telling me.”
“Help me understand more of what you see.”
PRAY, CONFESS & REPENT
Father, I know my tendency is to defend instead of receive truth. Give me humility to listen and recognize Your grace and truth coming through a friend.
COACHING
Safety in friendship depends on both how truth is spoken and how it’s received.
If honesty gets punished, honesty disappears.
Feedback is rarely perfect, but usually contains something you need. Saying thank you honors your friend’s courage and keeps the door open.
ACTION STEP
Ask a core friend: “What have you wanted to say, but weren’t sure I’d receive well?”
Listen. Thank. Pray. Learn.
TALK & PRAY WITH FRIENDS
Ask: “What makes it easier or harder for us to give each other honest feedback?”
Pray for humility to speak and receive truth with courage and grace.
COMMITMENT
I will receive honest feedback as a gift instead of an attack.
HABIT
Ask for feedback. Say thanks. Own what’s true.
TAKEAWAY
Level 5 Friends are brave enough to speak truth and humble enough to receive it.
Pride kills safety.
Gratitude keeps the door open for truth and growth.
