Help One Man in Crisis

STORY:
When I’m facing a crisis, one of life’s big blitzes or a prolonged struggle, I lean into my core friends and they rally around me.

One of us 3 Amigos who huddle weekly went through six brutal months of 90-hour work weeks trying to get out of a messy business he’d bought. At the same time, his family was going through some intense meltdowns. For months, probably 80% of our weekly huddle focused on him.

He didn’t apologize for needing us. And we didn’t get tired of him. We listened, asked questions, prayed, offered perspective, and kept reminding him of God’s love, big picture, and sovereign control.

Sometimes friendship in a crisis or long struggle isn’t balanced. One guy needs his brothers to carry more of the load for a season. Then someday it may be your turn.

That’s what core friends do. Crisis can forge friendship into teamwork.

Core friends don’t slack under the pressure of one guys season of struggle. They lean in, learn together, and keep showing up.

TRUTH
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2
“A friend loves at all times”, and sometimes one man’s crisis will take more time and attention for a season.

That’s not failure. That’s brotherhood.

ACTION
Find out if your core friend is under unusual pressure right now.

Assure him that it’s God’s way to team up and face a big burden together, so never hold back in your season of need.:

Ask, “What would help you most in this season—and how can I best support you?”

Adjust your attention or the time, place, and rhythm so friendship doesn’t drift when he needs it most.

TALK ABOUT IT
Ask your CORE:
“When one of us hits a crisis season, what would help us stay close instead of letting pressure cause drift?”

Talk about how each of you wants to be supported when life gets heavy.

GO DEEPER:

Examine yourself – When a friend’s crisis takes extra time, do I?

  • get impatient?
  • start preaching?
  • resent the imbalance?
  • try to fix what only God can?
  • pull back because it feels heavy?
  • know when to suggest outside help?
  • patiently help carry the burden with presence, prayer and practical support?

How –

  • Care: “We’re with you. You’re not alone.”
  • Listen: “Tell us what’s really going on.”
  • Clarify: “What is most vital right now?”
  • Truth: “What part do you need to own?”
  • Prayer: “Let’s take this to Father God.”
  • Next Step: “What is the next wise action?”
  • Support: “How can I help or best check in before we huddle next?”

Insight –

  • Grace says, “We’re with you.”
  • Truth says, “What do you need to own?”
  • Wisdom says, “Who else needs to be involved?”
  • Prayer says, “Father, lead us and take care of this Your way.”
  • Teamwork says, “Your life matters to me. We’re in this together.”

If a crisis involves danger, addiction, abuse, serious depression, suicidal thoughts, major betrayal, legal issues, or ongoing destructive patterns, bring in appropriate help quickly. Core friends don’t pretend to be professionals. Know when to involve pastors, counselors, doctors, recovery groups, or emergency help.

But don’t underestimate what a real friend can do.

  • A text.
  • A call.
  • A prayer.
  • A ride, visit, or outing.
  • A meal.
  • A wise question.
  • A calm presence.
  • A reminder of identity in Christ.
